Deborah Russel Obituary
Deborah "Debby" Small Russel, longtime resident of Windham Center, passed peacefully on December 3, 2023. Born on March 7, 1946, in Portland, Maine, Debby's life was a testament to her unwavering kindness and selfless nature. She is survived by her devoted husband of 56 years, James Russel; her loving sons, Matthew and Andrew Russel; her cherished daughter-in-law, Elizabeth; and her adored grandchildren, William and Sophie Russel.
Debby began her life in Connecticut as a student at Connecticut College, where she earned a degree in zoology. This course of study gave her an understanding of the interconnectedness of humans and nature that helped shape how she saw her place in the world. This became the foundation for her driving values to enrich the lives of all beings she encountered. Debby found meaning through her work as a counselor at Planned Parenthood and as an activity coordinator at Douglas Manor. In both roles Deb offered empathy to bring solace and balance in difficult circumstances, lending buoyancy and light to those who needed hope. She seemed to instinctively know how to help and had a natural grace that put people at ease.
Community service was another important aspect of Debby’s life. She worked tirelessly as an integral parish member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Windham Center for decades. She offered her talents to beautify public gardens in Willimantic. Deb also performed with numerous choral groups, particularly Take Note!, in an effort to fundraise for various organizations. It is difficult to estimate the number of hours Debby volunteered to better the lives of those around her. Whenever Debby needed inspiration or a renewal of energy she turned to nature. She found all creatures amazing in their own way. The birds, squirrels and other wildlife that visited her bird feeders were a source of endless wonder and entertainment. She cared for her outdoor visitors with the care of an accommodating hostess. Her daily hikes through the trails of Northeast Connecticut were another source of profound admiration for resiliency of the species that surround us. Her ability to appreciate the arch of a tree or the abundance of moss was a reminder that nothing alive could be taken for granted.
Words alone cannot capture the essence of Debby. She was the embodiment of kindness, a generous soul who gave without expecting anything in return. Her selflessness was a guiding light for all who knew her, inspiring a legacy of love that will continue to resonate through the lives she touched. Though we mourn the loss, we also celebrate the incredible life she led and the impact she made on everyone fortunate enough to have known her.
