David Bass Obituary
David Franklin Bass, 87, died on January 7, 2023 at his home in Scotland, Connecticut following a long, courageous battle against myelodysplastic syndrome.  A life-long resident of Scotland, David was the seventh child of Eben and Helen Bass.  He was raised on the family farm, leaving only for a short stint of service as an MP in the U.S. Army’s 25th Lightening Division before returning home to his wife, Cynthia, whom he married in 1956.  David joined the Bass Brothers partnership with his brothers Steven and John, both deceased, and his brother William, of Ocala, Florida.  David retired from farming in 1994.  He was also predeceased by his brothers Eben and Harold, and by his sisters Ann and Clare.

David was truly, deeply loved by his family and community.  He served as Scotland’s School Board Chairman, chairman of its zoning commission, and as a deacon and a trustee of the Scotland Congregational Church.  There are many, many stories of David’s acts of kindness to those both in and out of his circle.  Raised in a tight-knit family, he extended that same sense of love and responsibility to those around him.  Nowhere was this more evident than in his devotion to his wife, children, and grandchildren.  In addition to his wife Cynthia, he is survived by his daughter Deborah Yeomans and her husband Gordon, of Scotland, son David and his wife Susan, of Hamden, and daughter Laura Brownstein and her husband, Michael, of New Haven.  He leaves four grandchildren: Stephanie Hopkins of Medford, Massachusetts, Maya Brownstein of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Samuel Bass of Hamden, and Nathan Brownstein of Brighton, Massachusetts.

A memorial service will be held at the Scotland Congregational Church in the spring.
