Daniel W. Talmadge

Daniel William Talmadge, 91, of Willington, passed away July 25, 2010. He was born January 21, 1919 in Cheshire, Connecticut to Katherine Driscoll Talmadge and Franklin William Talmadge. He was educated at Crosby High School, Cheshire Academy, the University of Maryland, the University of Massachusetts and Penn State University. He served with distinction as a U.S. Army Captain during WWII in the 3rd Division Army Infantry. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, a Purple Heart with an Oak Leaf Cluster, two Bronze Stars and several Battle Stars. He was an Associate Professor of Poultry Science at the University of Connecticut from 1949 to 1979. In addition to teaching courses in poultry science, physiology, genetics and management, he conducted research and supported the University's Extension program. In 1976 Dan was invited to evaluate proposals for the National Science foundation for a project intended for Egypt. He was the only representative of a college of agriculture to write for a grade six book published by Xerox Corporation. He participated in the writing conference "Science-A Process Approach" sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. For eleven years he was a member of the Instruction Section, Poultry Science Association, and served as its chairman. Dan was active in Willington town activities; he coached youth baseball, served on the PTA school transportation committee and participated on the New Willington Library Committee. He loved his home, "Hye Acres Tree Farm" and it was there that he was most comfortable. He is survived by a son, Daniel C. Talmadge of Ithaca, N.Y. and four daughters: Mary Ann and Dennis Poitras of Ashford, Susan and Vaughan Newcombe of Windham, Kathleen and Paul Colburn of Marlborough and Jane and Joe Kalinowski of Ashford; eleven grandchildren; a sister Ann Eldred, North Palm Beach FL; a very dear friend, Fern Daigle; and two long time caregiver-friends, Zen Bulavko of Hartford and Hue Huang of Willimantic. His family will receive relatives and friends at the Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St., Rte. 195, Willimantic on Thursday July 29, 2010 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the procession to his Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Chapel in Storrs.
