D. Stedman Hanks, 90, of 257 Hanks Hill Rd., Storrs, husband of the late Virginia (Sexton) Hanks, died Wednesday June 11, 2003 at 7:45 p.m. after a long illness. He was born March 18, 1913 on Hanks Hill, Mansfield, the son of the late Dwight H. Hanks and Ethel Lila Raynes, and had resided in Storrs for most of his life. After graduating from Morse Business College in 1933 his first employment was as Paymaster of the Albert Steiger Co. of Hartford, next he was drafted and became a veteran of World War II, serving in the finance department of the Army Air Force for more than 3 years in the American and European Theaters. At the end of the war he was employed by the Hartford Times, eventually being promoted to Auditor, Chief Accountant and Office Manager. Later he was employed by the Fuller Brush Company of East Hartford as an accountant in charge of all branch offices accounting. Last he was employed by the State of Connecticut in the Comptroller's office, central accounting division as supervisor of revenue accounting, retiring on April 1, 1983 at age 70. He was a member of Uriel Lodge A.F.&A.M. #24. He is survived by two daughters Beverly Ann Beckwith of Vernon and Elizabeth Lila Hanks of Storrs, a brother, Clinton C. Hanks of West Hartford, 2 granddaughters, Dana Louise Hopkins of Baltimore, MD and Jennifer Lynn Knickerbocker of Virginia Beach, VA, a great grandson Jacob Ryan Knickerbocker of Virginia Beach, several cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St., Rte. 195, Willimantic with the Reverend Dr. Kenneth Ferguson officiating. Burial will follow in the Storrs Cemetery. His family will receive friends at the funeral home 1 hour prior to the service.
