Conrad Castillo Obituary
Bob Castillo passed away unexpectedly on July 29, 2024.
Bob was an only son born in Tampa, Florida to Conrad Robert Castillo Sr. and Consuelo (Fluentes) Castillo, and spent his youth growing up near the bay, swimming in the warm gulf waters and growing to be a skilled fisherman as was his father. Bob excelled musically as a teen, playing the snare drum throughout his time at Plante High School where he later graduated at the top of his class. During his senior year, Bob was thrilled to learn that he had been accepted into the Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT. This is also where he met the love of his life, Diane, and would carry her with him in his heart as he sailed around the world, bringing her gifts from each port he visited. They were married on April 4, 1959.
Bob later went on to complete his education at Eastern Connecticut State University, graduating Summa Cum Laude. Bob served for 18 years as the first Spanish-speaking officer with the Willimantic Police, and later served as an officer with the Eastern University Police.
Bob carried his lifelong love of drumming, which had been first instilled in him by his instructor Bill Hamond, playing his first rudiments with his high school band, and later joining the Westbrook Fife and Drum Corps and serving as Music Master in the Nathan Hale Ancient Fife and Drums Corp, inspiring an entire generation of musicians along the way.
Bob was able to attend this year’s Deep River Ancient Muster on July 20 and play his drum one last time in the jam session surrounded by his lifelong friends.
Bob leaves his wife Diane Joan Vars Castillo of 65 years, four children, Mark Castillo and his wife Nancy of Chaplin CT, Michelle Leon and her husband Herminio of North Windham CT, Elaine Duchaineau of Middletown CT, and Mary Blankenship and her husband Jack of Hampton CT, as well as 7 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Bob loved his family, and he and his wife would hold family gatherings on the holidays to bring everyone together. They would wear their matching Momma and Poppa Bear sweaters and made everyone feel special and loved.
Bob lived his life to the fullest.
