Clyde A. Jones

November 10, 1924 — December 28, 2008

Clyde Adam Jones, a resident of the Mansfield Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation, died at the Center, where he had received compassionate care, on December 28, 2008. Dr. Jones, the son of the late Lester L. and Myra (Karker) Jones, was born in Cobleskill, NY on November 10, 1924. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II and then went on to receive a BFA and MFA degree from Syracuse University and, in 1961, an EdD degree from Pennsylvania State University. He taught at Edinboro (PA) State College before joining the faculty of the School of Home Economics and Family Studies at UConn in 1961. He became a Professor Emeritus at UConn in 1985. Dr. Jones specialized in early childhood education in the arts and was active in related state, regional, and national associations. He was also an accomplished artist and had a number of one-man shows and took part in many group shows. On his many travels, he sketched buildings and scenes. His friends and colleagues knew him for the delicate pencil drawings that he created, using those sketches, for his Christmas cards up until the time of his death. He also designed note cards for the Mansfield Senior Center. His sisters Blanche Phillips and Florence Rebovich, their husbands, and six nieces and two nephews survive Dr. Jones. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Sunday January 11, 2009 in the Class of 1947 Meeting Room on the Plaza Level of the Homer Babbidge Library on the UConn campus in Storrs. Attendees are encouraged to share their memories of Clyde at that service. A reception will follow the service. A burial service will be held in the family cemetery plot in Cobleskill, NY in the spring. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Clyde Adam Jones Scholarship Fund in the UConn Foundation, or to the Mansfield Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation.
