Charles "Chuck" "Poppy" Smith Sr., 59, of Lebanon, husband of JoAnn (Vardon) Smith, died Saturday January 4, 2003 at home. He was born September 25, 1943 in Lawrence, MA, the son of Maine Smith of New Hampshire and Florida and the late Janet (Hendry) Smith. He was a 1962 graduate of Andover, MA High School and employed at Pratt &Whitney Aircraft in Middletown for 28 years. Mr. Smith was a former member of the Masonic Lodge in Meriden, the Echo Grange and an active member of the Jackson St. Senior Center in Willimantic. He was an avid train buff and accomplished cross-stitcher, receiving numerous awards and ribbons including the prestigious Blue Ribbon from the Grange. In addition to his wife and father he is survived by 4 children, Carolyn Rys of Lebanon, Charles R. Smith Jr. of Hebron, Robert A. Smith Sr. of Plainfield, Timothy J. Smith of Clinton, 2 stepchildren, Karen Carter of Lebanon and Leonard Kinney of Lebanon, 2 brothers, Maine E. Smith of Chesire and Donald J. Smith of Sundown, NH, 9 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. a t Redeemer Lutheran Church, 328 Village Hill Rd., Lebanon. Burial will be private. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Echo Grange, c/o Sarah Tormey, 10 Meadowbrook Lane, Mansfield Center, CT 06250.
