Charles A. Fritz, Jr., 87, of Storrs, a retired professor and former chairman of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Connecticut, died on March 14, 2005 following a long illness. Dr Fritz joined the University faculty in 1947 and became Chairman of the Department in 1973. He retired in 1983. He specialized in the Philosophy of Science and Logic and in the work of Bertrand Russell. He published Bertrand Russell's Construction of the External World in 1952. Born in Columbus Ohio, Dr. Fritz attended the Fieldston School in New York City, Columbia Univ., Class of 1939, Brown Univ., MA and received his Ph.D from Columbia. He was a veteran of World War II where he worked on the development of radar and radar guidance systems. Dr. Fritz was an active walker and nature enthusiast with a great interest in stamp collecting, trains and travel. Following his retirement, he was a volunteer guide at the Windham Textile and History Museum and worked as archivist and librarian at the Willimantic Train Museum. Dr. Fritz was married to Anita D. Fritz, who was also a member of the University of Connecticut faculty and who died in 1991. He is survived by a son, Charles A Fritz, III of Kintnersville, PA, two grandchildren, Jennifer F. Maitland of Annapolis, MD and Charles A. Fritz IV of Chicago, IL and two great-grandchildren, Kitty and Charlie Fritz. A funeral service will be held at the Potter Funeral Home 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195), Willamantic, CT on Saturday March 26th 2005 at 11AM. A private interment will follow in the Storrs Cemetery.
