Charles William Anthes, 86, of Windham,CT., formerly of Mamaroneck, NY, beloved husband of Ethel (Schroeder) Anthes, died Sunday Aug. 7, 2011 at Hartford Hospital. He was born on May 9, 1925 in Port Chester, NY the son of the late Charles Wellington Anthes Jr. and Marion (Gedney) Anthes. A resident of Windham, he had retired from American Thread Company in Willimantic, CT in 1985 after being employed in the Finance Division for 37 years. Charles was a graduate (magna cum laude) of New York University where he was a member of Beta Gamma Sigma. He served in World War II with the 301st Regiment of the 94th Infantry Division in the ETO and was a recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals. Charles was a member of St. Mark Episcopal Chapel in Storrs, CT and a former vestryman and treasurer of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Mamaroneck, NY and of St. Paul Episcopal Church in Willimantic, CT. He was an active volunteer for 25 years at Homer Babbidge Library of University of Connecticut and for 33 years with American Red Cross in Willimantic. He was a former director of Willimantic Savings and Loan Assoc., Liberty Bank and Hatch Hospital Corp; and for many years was a board member and treasurer of Boy Scout Troop 34. Charles received the Maurice Heon Award from the United Way in 1999. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his brother and sister in law Richard and Mildred Anthes of Westerly, RI, his daughter in law Linda Anthes of Coventry, CT and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Charles John Anthes in 2001. There are no calling hours. A graveside service will be held on Thursday Aug. 11th at 11:30 am in Greenwood Union Cemetery, 215 North St., Rye, NY. Memorial donations may be made to St. Mark Episcopal Chapel Memorial Fund, 42 North Eagleville Rd., Storrs, CT. 06268 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
