Carol (Kale) Laverty, wife of J. Jeffrey Laverty of Mansfield Center, CT, died Tuesday November 15, 2011 at Windham Hospital from complications associated with pancreatic cancer. Carol was born on October 3, 1943 in Belfast, PA. She was predeceased by her parents Carl Kale and Lanier (Neigh). She is survived by two sons: Jack (and his wife Connie) of Windham Center and Keith (and his wife Ellen) of Burlington, CT. Keith and Ellen have a son Steven and a daughter Jessica. Carol also leaves behind three brothers and a sister: Ronald Kale of Mt. Joy, PA, Raymond Kale of Wind Gap, PA, Deborah Gasdaska of Hellertown, PA, and Robert Kale of Bethlehem, PA. Carol was a registered nurse at Windham Hospital from 1970 to 2005 (she received a diploma R.N. from St. Lukes Hospital in Bethlehem, PA in 1964). In 2005, she was recognized as 'Caregiver of the Year' by the Windham Hospital Auxiliary. After Carol's retirement from Windham Hospital, she served as an infection control consultant with United Services until October 2011. Carol was known by many in the community because of two of the positions she held at Windham Hospital: Evening Nurse Supervisor from the late 1970s to the early 1980's, and Infection Control and Employee Health Nurse from 1992 to 2005. Her church and her family were the prime focuses in her life. Carol's interests included almost every kind of craft making as well as sewing, knitting, and quilting. Her church life at the First United Methodist Church revolved around participation in various activities. For many years she directed church dinners and more recently organized Soup Sundays during the winter months. She also led a craft-making group on Fridays in the last few years. Carol was a member of the CT Eastern Railroad Museum here in Willimantic and usually helped out with the museum's special events. Calling hours will be at the Potter Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, November 25. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 26 at the First United Methodist Church (FUMC), 29 Puddin Lane, Mansfield Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to FUMC.
