Dr. Carl F. Washburn, Jr. died of a heart attack on April 26, 2014. Since 2011 he was an attending psychiatrist at Natchaug Hospital, Mansfield Center, CT. In previous years he served on the staffs of Hartford Hospital, The Institute of Living, and the Geriatric Mental Health Service in Hartford, CT. Dr. Washburn was a gifted diagnostician, a talented healer, and an inspirational teacher. He was deeply admired and respected by colleagues, students, and patients, as well as hospital support staff. Dr. Washburn was a graduate of the Psychosomatic Medicine Fellowship, Hartford Hospital, University of Connecticut/The Institute of Living Psychiatry Residency Training Program, Ross University School of Medicine, and John Bastyr College of Naturopathic Medicine. In addition, he was appointed as Clinical Instructor, Department of Psychiatry, University of Connecticut School of Medicine and Clinical Adjunct Associate Professor, Quinnipiac University. He authored numerous professional publications and was the recipient of several awards for educational excellence. He was a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a past president of the Hartford Psychiatric Society. Of his many accomplishments, Dr. Washburn was most proud of being a graduate of the United States Marine Corps bootcamp at Paris Island and a Force Recon Marine. He was a staunch patriot and proud of his Native American heritage. Dr. Washburn is survived by his wife, Captain Mary E. Washburn, USN/RET and several dogs, cats, and horses whom he considered "family." In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Nokota Horse Conservancy (
