Betty Gardner, 92, of Ashford, CT, beloved wife of Leon Gardner for nearly 72 years, was welcomed into the presence of her Lord on Monday, June 21, 2021. She was born in 1928 in London, England to Harold and Eleanor (Dinsdale) Pyrke. Betty met Leon during his World War II service in England. At 21, she left England and was married to Leon in Ashford. They started married life, and then their family, in Pennsylvania and moved back to Ashford where they raised their children. Betty worked for a time as librarian of the Ashford Babcock Library and later served on its board of directors. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Michael (Linda), David (Lisa) and Sharon Godere (Paul); six grandchildren: Aaron Gardner (Nina Krstic), Christopher Gardner (Zoe McGlamery), Benjamin Gardner (Michelle St. Pierre), Rachel McCue (Casey), Christina Pearman and Stephanie Marx (Forrest); ten great-grandchildren: Emelia, Isaac, Emmeline, Severin, Owen, Maeve, Gwendolyn, Adeline, Eleanor and Finn. Betty’s family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, June 27, 2021 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St, Willimantic. Her funeral service will be at Potter Funeral Home on Monday, June 28, 2021 at 10:30am, with burial to follow at Woodward Cemetery, Ashford Center Road, Ashford.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Friends of the Babcock Library in Betty’s name. The address is 25 Pompey Hollow Road Ashford, CT 06278-1552.
