Betsy B.
Parker
November 28, 1958 – February 17, 2026
Betsy Burnham Parker passed away peacefully at her home on February 17, 2026. Betsy was born on November 28, 1958 to George Thomas and Carolyn (Johnson) Parker in New Haven Connecticut.
Betsy cherished the wonderful memories she had of her childhood spent surrounded by family in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Betsy was a graduate of Lunenburg High School in Lunenburg, MA. A natural athlete, Betsy’s commitment to excellence and her competitive spirit ensured that she excelled in all athletic pursuits. A four-sport athlete for Lunenburg High School, Betsy was a varsity starter for four years in field hockey and basketball and for three years in softball. In her sophomore year, she participated in track and field and was the Wachusett League, district, and state champion in the javelin. She was team captain in her senior year in three sports: basketball, field hockey and softball. She led her basketball team in scoring her senior year, when the team was a District III finalist. She was named the Knight Crier Athlete of the Year her senior year, becoming the first female recipient of that award. Betsy was inducted into the Lunenburg High School Hall of Fame in 2019
Betsy earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Connecticut. Upon graduation from UCONN Betsy joyfully began her career as a teacher where she would go on to touch countless lives. With a determination to reach every person she came into contact with and a commitment to make her schools the best they could be, Betsy faced each and every day with a positivity, helpfulness and drive that was admired by all who saw her in her element. While Betsy spent time teaching at Turkey Hill Middle School in Lunenburg and Mansfield Middle School the majority of her career was spent at Southeast Elementary School in Mansfield Center. There Betsy touched the lives of thousands of students who would emphatically tell you that gym class was the best part of their school day, colleagues who believe they became better teachers because of her example and families who felt her love and dedication in so many different ways.
So much more than a teacher of Physical Education, Betsy worked tirelessly to ensure that every moment of every school day was filled with exciting and challenging activities within and outside of the school building. Recess Sports, Mileage Club, Running Club, Kids’ Marathon, the Adventures Ropes Course, the annual Turkey Trot, Fun in Our Own Backyard, student performances, school wide assemblies, PTO events, individual times for students in the gym; wherever and whenever Betsy could do something that would benefit the students or staff of Southeast School, she was all in. Betsy was a gifted educator who knew each unique individual she taught and had the skills to guide them in their physical and emotional development. Her sparkling blue eyes, winks and warm smiles made every student feel seen and supported. Miss Parker was every child’s biggest cheerleader. Betsy did everything she could to make sure every day was a great day at Southeast School and her outstanding work as an educator was recognized by her colleagues and the Mansfield Board of Education. Betsy was selected as Mansfield's Teacher of the Year in 2001 and went on to be a semi finalist for Connecticut Teacher of the Year.
Beyond her school day Betsy was a well respected coach of countless town basketball teams making her a valued member of the Mansfield Parks and Recreation staff. When school closed for the summer Betsy jumped right into camp mode working with area coaches in basketball skills camps and as a beloved staff member at Holiday Hill Day Camp. Betsy was also a member of PEO, a philanthropic educational organization for women.
Betsy took great pride in being her family’s historian and preserving records and items from their past. Predeceased by her parents and her brother William J. Parker, Betsy is survived by her sister Bonnie S. Parker of Portland,OR, her brother Bradford T. Parker (Kathy) of West Lafayette, IN and her sister-in-law Sherry L. Parker-Fanning of Louisville, KY. Additionally, Betsy leaves several cherished nieces and nephews and a growing number of great-nieces and great-nephews. Countless friends are left to mourn her loss while they hold tremendous gratitude for being part of Betsy’s life.
