Bertha Schiller

Bertha (Horn) Schiller, age 93, of Sarasota, FL, formerly of Mansfield Center, CT passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 11, 2015. She was the widow of Frank Schiller. They were married for 67 years. She was born in Detroit, MI, March 3, 1922. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Holin) Horn, and her late siblings were Sam Horn, Abe Horn and Becky Kaplan. Bertha was a 1940 Latin Diploma Graduate of Windham High School. She was a 1944 graduate of UCONN with a B.A. in English. In 1957 Bertha competed her 5th year in Early Childhood Education at Eastern CT State University and in 1967 Bertha completed her M.S. in Education at Eastern with an emphasis on elementary reading skills. Bertha was well known as an educator, teaching First Grade at Annie E. Vinton School in Mansfield Center from 1957 to 1987. Bertha's family was most important to her. Together Bertha and Frank raised two children, Gene of Sarasota, FL and the late Paula Schiller. Bertha adored her grandsons Jeremy and Jonathan Schiller, his wife Dana and Bertha's great granddaughter, 20 month old Faxon. Bertha moved to Sarasota in 2011 to be near Gene and her daughter-in -law Marge along with both her grandsons and family. All lived near her, sharing many activities and holidays together. Bertha enjoyed her life in her independent apartment and the programs at Kobernick House, operated by the Sarasota Manatee Jewish Housing Council. A graveside service will take place on Monday, November 16, 2015 at 11:00AM at Temple Bnai Israel Cemetery, at the intersection of Rte. 31 and Rte. 32 in Mansfield Center, CT.
