Bernard Marlin, loving father and grandfather, 81, of Storrs died on Thursday, March 25, 2004 at Evergreen Healthcare Center in Stafford Springs. He was born on November 11, 1922 in New York City, the son of Mark and Anna (Bockman) Marlin. Bernie received a Bachelors Degree from City College in New York, and a Masters Degree from Columbia University. He also received his Ph.D from The University of Connecticut, and attended the University of California in Berkley as a John Hay fellow in 1961. Bernie was a beloved teacher for 17 years in Fairfield, Ct., and 22 years at E.O. Smith High School in Storrs. He retired in 1987. He then served as Supervisor of Student Teachers at UCONN and Eastern Connecticut State University. He is a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army Airforce, and was the recipient of a Purple Heart. He was a member of the Mansfield Board of Education and the Mansfield Bicentennial Commission. He was pre-deceased by his beloved wife of 54 years, Barbara ("Bobby") Marlin. He is survived by his daughter Linda and her husband Raymond of Pepperell, Ma., and their children Joshua and Jennifer; his son Richard and his wife Rosemary of Ashford, Ct., and their three children Morgan, Joshua, and Jillian; his daughter Jane of Willimantic, Ct; and his son David and his wife Cindy of South Windsor, Ct, and their children Katerina and Zachary; his brother Stanley of New York, and his sister Sondra (Marlin) Kastin of Virginia. Bernie was an avid Huskies fan. He and his wife Bobby were a beloved fixture at the main entrance of all UCONN sporting events, where they collected tickets for 20 years. Although Bernie was born and raised in the Bronx, he was an enthusiastic Red Sox fan, and always hoped to live to see them win the World Series. There will be a short graveside ceremony on Tuesday, March 30th, at 10:00 am, at Hillel Burial Society Cemetery, (corner of Rte. 32 and 31), Mansfield. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, his family suggests memorial donations to Bernie's favorite charity, The Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 120 Wall Street, New York, NY, 10005 in the name of Joshua Landry.
