Barbara Dyer Obituary
Barbara F. Dyer, 78, of Franklin, passed away Thursday, January 11 at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, as a result of an automobile accident.

Born in Lawrence, MA, the daughter of Joseph and Barbara Foley, Barbara was raised in Lawrence and South Bend, IN.  She graduated from John Adams High School in South Bend in 1963 and Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, IN with a Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology in 1967.

After graduating, Barbara worked in analytical and managerial roles in medical technology at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where she met the dental student who became her husband.  She married Dr. James A. Dyer on June 10, 1972, in the Chapel by the Sea in Newport, RI, and then continued her career at Newport Hospital.  In later years, she was the assistant at her husband’s oral surgery practice in Flanders, until their retirement.

Barbara was a loving, dedicated mother to her three sons, supporting them and volunteering throughout their schooling and youth activities, such as the Franklin PTO, Sprague-Franklin Little League, and Cub Scout Pack 15.  She was an avid reader, a skilled cook, and enjoyed sewing, needlepoint, and knitting.  Barbara had a photographic, encyclopedic memory and was able to quickly recall even the smallest of details.  You definitely wanted her on your Trivial Pursuit team, and she seemed to have every answer on Jeopardy.

Barbara was admired for her generous friendship, kindness, volunteerism, and good citizenry, and she greatly appreciated those qualities in others.  She was a founding board member of and volunteer at the Janet Carlson Calvert Library and was a long-time member and treasurer of the Franklin Garden Club.  For more than 40 years, Barbara was a committed parishioner at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Lebanon; she immersed herself in and deeply loved that faith community as an extension of our family.

Barbara leaves behind her devoted husband of 51 years, James, of Franklin, her sons, James Jr. (Kristyn) of Southbridge, MA, Matthew of Waterford, CT, and Adam (Wendy) of Mt. Lebanon, PA; her grandchildren Frances, Liam, Sydney, Maya, and Rory; her siblings Kathleen Harmon (Kirk), Susan Suggs (Steven), and Joseph Foley (Julie); and many nieces, nephews, and godchildren.

Friends and relatives are welcome to join the family for calling hours from 9:00 to 10:30am at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St., Willimantic, on Saturday, January 20th. A service is to follow at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 67 W. Town St., Lebanon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Barbara’s memory to the Janet Carlson Calvert Library, 5 Tyler Drive, Franklin, CT  06254.
