August "Augie" Charles Volkens, born Aug. 21, 1937 in Brooklyn, NY, lost his long battle with lung disease early Sunday morning Feb. 3, 2013 at his home in Columbia. He was the son of the late August W. Volkens and Eunice I. Goodwin. He was predeceased by his younger sister Margaret "Sissy" Volkens and younger brother Paul Geib. He is survived by his wife of forty eight years, Gladys (Kern) Volkens, daughter Gladys Volkens Barros and her husband Christopher of Columbia, son Augie G. Volkens and his wife Kimberly of Milford, Raymond and his wife Jean and August and his wife Toni all of NY and Philip and his companion Rod of FL, and the greatest joys of his life, his grandchildren, Blake, Nicholas and Yvonne Barros of Columbia, Ashley and Heather Volkens of Milford, Ashley Volkens of NY, and John, Regina and Raymond all of NY; 4 great grandchildren, Noah, Patrick, Billy and Britney. He also leaves behind his brother Peter and sisters Joyce, Linda, Susan and Teresa and their families. He had his own business, Augie's Carpet Service, which he started in Oklahoma and brought to Connecticut in the fall of 1978. He worked for Modern Linoleum, Michaud Flooring and Frank Schiller, during which time he met and made many friends. He loved crabbing, which he did in many states from Texas , Florida and right up the east coast. Augie enjoyed his gambling and felt he won the jackpot with his family and grandchildren. The family would like to thank both Dr. LaGuardia and Dr. Bundy for their many years of care. Our father thought of them as close friends right up to the end. Bless them and their staff. His family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday Feb. 7, 2013 between 6:00 and 8:00pm at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 11:00am with interment following in Center Cemetery, Columbia.
