Anna (Green) Jurgens, of Columbia, died Wednesday Aug. 31, 2011 at home. Born November 5, 1910, at home, in Warrior Run, Pennsylvania she grew up in Easton, Pennsylvania. On May, 21, 1931 she graduated from Sacred Heart Hospital Nursing School in Allentown, Pennsylvania. She spent 48 years in active nursing, having been licensed in four states, California, Connecticut, New York and Pennsylvania. In 1938 she married Henry Jurgens, a New York City policeman. In 1940 a son, Henry was born. While in New York, she worked as a Nursing Supervisor at the Orthopedic Pediatric Hospital and Reis Park Children's Hospital. She was employed as a nurse for the Veterans Administration in New York and Providence, Rhode Island for eight years. The family moved to Scotland, Connecticut in 1951. After her job at the VA, she became head of the medical department for Kaman Aircraft in Moosup, Connecticut . During the mid 1950's she worked in Willimantic for Dr. Rubin Rothblatt and later for Dr. Gerald Sandler. She then went to work for the Windham Community Memorial Hospital as a Nursing Supervisor for five years. In 1967 she and her husband moved to Chula Vista, California. Her husband passed away in 1970.She continued in nursing in California until 1979. She returned to Connecticut in 1980 and purchased a home in Columbia where she was a resident for over 30 years. She was employed as an administrator and caregiver for Nellie Teale of Hampton. Mrs. Teale was the wife of the late Edwin Way Teale who was a Pulitzer Prize winner for his books as a naturalist. Presently the Teale property, which has been donated to the Audubon Society, is open to the public as a Nature Sanctuary. She took care of Mrs. Teale until her death in 1993. Her favorite passion has been watching on TV and attending in person UCONN Women's basketball events. Her theme in life is " Be Kind to Others". She loved to help people and has helped MANY in her long lifetime. She has in addition to her son, a daughter in law Laura Hines-Jurgens, two grandchildren, David Jurgens and Deanna Jurgens (Cook), and two great grandchildren, Ethan Cook, and Caitlin Cook. Additionally, she has a sister Marcella Vreeland, in Anchorage, Alaska, late sisters; Catherine (Tervidis) Zlotnick, Scotland, CT, Sally Hitzel, Phoenix, AZ and a late brother; John Green, Phoenix, AZ.
