Ann Shirley (Lieser) Johnson, 80, of Chaplin, CT, passed away peacefully at home on March 16, 2022 with her husband by her side.

She was born on July 27,1941 in Hartford, CT.  She spent part of her childhood in Windham, Vermont before moving back to CT.  Ann graduated from RHAM High School Hebron, CT in 1959.  She married Lee F. Johnson on March 7, 1959 and had three children, Wenda, Gary and Joyce. In 1968, they bought their family home (River Edge Farm) in Chaplin, CT.

Ann found her passion for horses at the age of 13. She started out as the 4-H leader of the Hebron Hoof Beats before founding the Chaplin Chaparrals 4-H Horse Club in Chaplin, where she remained the 4-H leader for over 40 years. Ann was also camp director for the Windham-Tolland 4-H horse camp for over 20 years. Her passion for working with horses and children continued at the family farm where she taught riding lessons for many years. Ann was known as the “Horse Woman” in  town, and well known throughout the horse community.

Ann drove school bus for the Town of Chaplin for many years and was very loved and respected by many.  She was a long-time member of the Chaplin Congregational Church, where she started up the second hand store the “Thrifty Shop”.  Ann loved all things nature and was most at peace on her horse or in her garden.

Ann is survived by her husband of 63 years, Lee F. Johnson and her three children, Wenda Slobodian and her late husband Stephen, of Brooklyn CT, Gary Johnson and his wife Brenda of Chaplin, CT and Joyce Johnson and her husband Bret Sychevsky of Chaplin, CT; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Betty Gates of Glastonbury CT and her brother Carlton Lieser of Wallingford CT and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at the South Chaplin Cemetery on Monday, March 21, 2022 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Windham-Tolland 4-H Camp 326, Taft Pond Rd, Pomfret Center, CT 06259.
