Andrew Carey, III Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of Andrew John Carey, III announces his passing on December 31, 2022. Andy was born in Willimantic, CT to Andrew and Alice (McGuire) Carey, on March 30, 1943. Andy was predeceased by his parents and wife DelAnne.
Andrew was a graduate of Windham High School, employed by the Southern New England Telephone Company, after which he entered military service. He was a member of the Army Special Forces, also known as the Green Berets, and served our country proudly during the Vietnam War. Following this he returned to employment with SNET and continued his education earning a degree from Eastern Connecticut State College.
He was active in politics, serving as a State Representative, and sat on numerous town committees over the years. Most recently he served on the committee for the Windham Community/Senior Center and the Water Pollution Control Authority. Among his other interests were travel and reading. He and DelAnne traveled extensively to numerous countries, nearly every continent.
He is survived by his siblings Kathleen Perlitz and her husband Frank, Ann DeMarchi and her husband Robert, James Carey and his wife Gail, Timothy Carey and his wife Kim, Maureen Etchells and Colleen Carey. Survivors also include many nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews.
The family extends our thanks to the staff at Windham Community Memorial Hospital who provided care for him on numerous occasions. Thanks also to the staff at Marlborough Health and Rehabilitation Center for the kind and compassionate care they gave him during his recent stay. The family is also grateful to several neighbors and friends who provided assistance, visits and company to Andy over the past few years. They were a source of much comfort to him, and to us. We also have greatly appreciated the ongoing support of Andy's home care needs by Care Plus More. They made it possible for Andy to remain in his home.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, January 5, 2023 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St., Willimantic. A graveside service will be on Friday, January 6, 2023 at 11:00am at the Windham Cemetery on Windham Center Road or Rte 203. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the South Windham Volunteer Fire Dept. or to Tunnel to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Blvd, Staten Island, NY 10306
Dear Brother, you will be greatly missed by many- family, friends, neighbors and others whose lives you touched. Rest in peace.
