Alec David Chesmer Obituary
Alec David Chesmer, better known as ‘David’, passed away peacefully, three months from his 101st birthday, on December 4, 2021, at his home in Lebanon, CT. David was born March 6, 1921 to Amos and Ellen (Brown) Chesmer in Cheltenham, England. During World War II, he served in the Royal Air Force as a pilot of a Vickers Wellington Long Range Bomber flying nighttime missions from North Africa across the Mediterranean Sea to the coast of Greece and Italy. David married Dorothy Dixon, his wife of 74 years, on January 17, 1942. After the war, he joined the first class of the National Institute of Rubber Technology in London, graduating in 1950. David emigrated to Canada on a steamship in 1954 with his wife Dorothy and two children, Robin and Lynda. A year later in 1955 the family moved to Windham, CT where his third child, Patricia, was born. David pursued a 32-year career at Roger’s Corporation in South Windham where he served as General Manager and retired as Vice President of Manufacturing. While at Roger’s Corporation, he was one of three inventors of a U.S. Patent for Polymeric Frictional Drive Wheel with Reinforcing Steel Inserts. David was active in the community and served on the Windham Board of Education. After retiring, he held a second career of 33 years in charge of everything involving plumbing at the family’s Graywall Farms in Lebanon.
David was detail orientated and methodical in all that he did. He enjoyed assisting the family in every manner, whether it was fixing a leaky faucet or cooking the holiday turkey. He kept up with the modern world, regularly texting and doing research on the internet while staying up to date with local and national affairs. David was physically active and led a fulfilling, productive life. Remarkably, he mowed his own lawn up to a few weeks before his passing. David made an impression on everyone he met and will be dearly missed.
David was predeceased by his wife Dorothy (Dixon) Chesmer, his sister Kath Chess and brothers Arthur G. Chesmer of Canada and Henry Chesmer of England. Sisters in-law, Grace Steggall, Eva Shirley, Mabel Chesmer, brothers in-law Bill Wetherall, James Shirley and Fred Chess, son in-law Arthur Breault and nephews Graham Chesmer, Arthur F. Chesmer and his wife Barbara, Gordon Black, Ron Corey, Myles Standish and Corin Standish.
David is survived by his three children, Robin Chesmer and his wife Kathryn, Lynda Breault and Patricia McMahon and her husband James. Seven grandchildren, Lisa Chesmer and her husband David Hevner, Lincoln Chesmer and his wife Amy, Neil Breault and his wife Amy, Andrea Moshier and her husband Douglas, Brenden McMahon, Kyle McMahon and his partner Natalie, and Colby McMahon. Also, niece Lenore Corey and niece June Black both living in Canada along with an extended Canadian family including Bronwen, David, Hilary, Cindy, Scott and Jordan.
David was very appreciative of the sincere friendship and excellent care provided by his caregiver Karen Leif and nurse Madi Douchette. And thanks to Debra Breault for helping in time of need. The value of local health services can’t be overstated, the staff at Windham Community Memorial Hospital, Hartford Healthcare at Home Hospice Care, Dr LaGuardia, and the professional and compassionate services provided by the Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department Ambulance team.
There are no calling hours. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. David would be proud to have donations in his memory made to the Connecticut Farmland Trust, 77 Buckingham St., Hartford, CT 06106
