Albert Evans, 83, of Mansfield, passed away peacefully Monday, July 29, 2013 at the Mansfield Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation. He was a life-long advocate for the mentally challenged, retiring from Mansfield Training School after a long career as the Social Service Director. One of his biggest professional achievements was establishing the Group Home system in CT, which eventually replaced the Training School itself. This was also his biggest professional challenge, and he accomplished this almost single-handedly, at a time when group homes were not accepted in many neighborhoods. He is predeceased by his wife Faith (Kendall) Evans of Gardner, MA., his sister Phyllis of Salem, MA., and his grandson Ryan Evans, of Mansfield. He leaves his three sons, Bruce Evans of Rapid City, SD, David Evans of Mansfield, CT, and Tom Evans of Lauderdale by The Sea, FL, his sister and her husband, Elaine and Fred Markel of Atlanta, GA, four grandsons, Dave Evans of Hampton, CT, Justin Evans of Hollywood, FL, Matt and Sam Evans of Rapid City, SD. Services will private and at the convenience of the family. The Evans family would like to thank everyone at Mansfield Center for their compassion and patience, and for providing such great care for Albert. The Potter Funeral Home, Willimantic assisted with arrangements. Please visit
