Thomas J. Roberts

Dr. Thomas J. Roberts, 92 of Tolland, passed away unexpectedly Saturday October 21, 2017. He was born in St. Paul, MN to the late John Arthur and Theresa Solheid Roberts. He maintained integrity and transparency throughout his entire life. He had a terrific sense of humor, and was a great soul. For those who truly loved him, only the physicality of their relationship has changed.

Tom had a wonderful family, many of whom live in Minnesota. He lived with Pauline Merrall of Tolland, they shared a special relationship for nearly two decades, they traveled overseas frequently. Tom’s immediate family is truly grateful for her caring and devotion throughout the years.

Tom grew up in the great depression, the library was his oasis. He volunteered to join the Navy in WW2, he then used the GI Bill to obtain a Ph. D. in English from the University of Minnesota. He taught in Cairo, Egypt and Fairbanks, Alaska prior to joining the faculty at UConn, where he taught English for 37 years. He was curious his entire life. He provided students education rather than specific training; he helped to “round” them. Tom always championed the underdog and donated to charities which helped people to help themselves. 

He is survived by his sons, Mark Roberts, and Dan Roberts, MBA; brother, Pat Roberts; Sisters, Mary Friedlander and Rose of MN; grandchildren, Morgan, Nikolis, Cheyenne, Callum, and his late son’s widow Claire McCall, Ph. D. as well as his cat, Andrew. Tom is predeceased by his son, Tom Roberts, Ph. D., his sister, Margaret and his brothe, Jack Roberts.

The family will greet relatives and friends Saturday November 11, 2017 at Potter Funeral Home 456 Jackson St. (Rt. 195) Willimantic at 2:00 pm with a "Celebration of Life" starting at 3:00 pm. It was Tom’s wish for people to share his stories.
