Roger J. Winkel, 91, of Manchester, formerly of Storrs, the husband of the late Patricia (Lombardo) Winkel, his beloved wife of 37 years, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2018.  He was born in Lakewood, OH, son of the late Nicholas and Florence (Sheak) Winkel.  Roger served in the Army and was part of the Allied Occupation of Germany after World War II.  He graduated from the University of Detroit and initially worked for U.S. Steel Corporation in Cleveland Ohio, where he met and married his wife Patricia, the great love of his life.  They moved to Connecticut in 1961 where he worked for 30 years in Marketing at Rogers Corporation until his retirement. A devout Catholic, he was a longtime parishioner at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Storrs where he was an active member of the Round Table and a eucharistic minister. Roger was known for being a gentleman and for his dry wit. He enjoyed bicycling and traveling and participated in several biking tours throughout the United States and Europe. He especially enjoyed spending time during the winter with family on Sanibel Island, Florida.  Roger is survived by his daughters, Julianne Winkel, of Vernon, Susan Winkel and her husband, David Crockett, of Branford, and his son, James Winkel and his wife Marcy, of Orange, and grandsons Christopher and Patrick Winkel. He was pre-deceased by his sister, Madeline, and his brother, Gordon.  Roger’s family would like to thank the staff and residents at White Oaks in Manchester and Ishmael Gyimah for their assistance, care, and friendship.  There are no calling hours.  His Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday January 5, 2019, at 10:00am at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 46 N Eagleville Rd, Storrs.
