Joe was one of my very favorite people -- professor, Ph.D thesis director, advisor, and wonderful friend, over an acquaintance of forty years. He will be missed. My condolences to Edie and the family. Sincerely, Sandy

Joe was one of my father's oldest and dearest friends. They grew up together in Buffalo, New York, and got into a great deal of mischief together. They both had terrific senses of humor, which fed on each other. Joe was godfather to my sister, Maire Graves Deverell. In many ways Joe and my father were very different -- Joe an intellectual, writer and poet, my father a businessman and athlete -- but they drew inspiration from each other. Friendships from youth stand the test of time. Joe delivered a lovely eulogy at my father's memorial service in 2012, and we will be thinking of him, of Edie and of the entire family on April 8 when you celebrate Joe's wonderful life. Thank you, Joe, for being such a true friend to the Graves family, and strength to you, Edie. Love, Nelson Graves on behalf of all of the Graveses from Buffalo

Fondly do I remember playing tennis with Joe. Often with Rufus, Tony, Charles, Buzz and others. We had great fun. Joe and I shared an interest in Trieste and film, among other things. I shall always remember his friendly charm, wit, sensitivity and empathy. Besides his family, his loss is felt by many of us whose lives he touched. May he rest in peace.

My condolences to Joe's family. You have lost a wonderful man. He was my most sympathetic colleague in the fusty English Department during the 1970s; also with Edie he offered essential support to my career in 1975 when they stepped up to the plate and invited me to place my two-year old daughter in Edie's Montessori school in Storrs so that I could continue in my second semester teaching at UConn. I am grateful to him for his generosity, grace, and gentle wisdom.

I will always remember Joe with the deepest affection. I last saw him a little over a year ago, sitting in his living room with Edie, both of them cheerful and content despite their physical disabilities. I was so glad to see them together.

Joe Cary had the best sense of humor of anyone I know. It was wry and subtle, and never missed the mark. I was always laughing at his witty remarks. My family and I spent many happy hours listening to "Lydia the Tattooed Lady" on his Groucho Marx record. He was also a big Fats Waller and Duke Ellington fan. I used to play their compositions on the Cary piano at gatherings. Also (and I'm sure Alice remembers this one fondly) I would accompany Joe, Petter, and my father to the strains of "We are poor little lambs who have lost our way...Baa, baa, baa."

Joe was the dear friend of my mother and father. Our families would get together at Christmas and many other times during the year. It was like visiting relatives: the kind you love.

To my dear friends Edie, Nat, and Alice, I send my deepest love.
Rest in peace, dear Joe.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Please find comfort in God's sure promise of a resurrection as set forth in the Bible. (Acts 24:15; John 5:28,29) Those who are raised to life will have the prospect of never again being subject to misery, sickness, or death. (Revelation 21:4) I hope that reflecting on these thoughts will give you some relief during this difficult time.
