Welcome to the memorial page for

Isabella (Eckstein) Vernon

August 19, 2018

It is with great sadness that Isabella M. L.(Eckstein) Vernon, of Windham, passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2018 after a long series of illnesses and is now joyously at peace in the loving arms of her Lord.  She was born in Vienna, Austria in 1945 and emigrated to the United States with her family a few years later.   Isabella was a highly respected professional.  She was a fourth grade teacher at North Windham (Noble) School for almost 40 years, teaching at least 1000 students.   She will be missed by all who knew her; but especially her daughter, Larysa, with whom she had a close loving relationship. Isabella grew up speaking Ukrainian, Polish, German, learning English upon immigration to the United States. She was proud of her heritage, creating and displaying many pillows with Ukranian folk art stitching in her home.  Her home was one of her happiest places. Isabella loved to garden and for many years she would spend hours planting and tending annuals around the property. She was a wonderful cook, creating traditional dishes such as holupchy, pirohi, and her scrumptious beef stroganoff.  She was known for outdoing herself in her meal spread for holidays and will be remembered for her generosity. At Easter, she would make traditional Ukrainian Pysanky with her daughter.  She valued family and friends and spoke with them regularly.  She was a daughter, mother, wife, sister, aunt, cousin, friend, and loved visiting with former students and teachers at the grocery store and around town.  One of her goals for all her achievers, whether in school or family, was for them to excel.  She would encourage setting the bar higher than they could reach, so they would achieve more than they thought possible.  In lieu of flowers Isabella would be joyful to know that you donated to the Wadsworth Healing Garden at Lawrence and Memorial hospital in memory of Isabella Vernon.   Send To: Office of Development, Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, 365 Montauk Avenue, New London, CT, 06320.
