Professor Rawitscher taught me Physics 38 Classical Mechanics when he was at Yale in the Fall of 1961, which was my junior year. Physcis 38 was the first upper level course of the Physics Major, but it was dicey for me, because I was a Chemistry Major. Because my mathematics had been behind the unspoken prerequisite for Physics 25 Advanced General Physics, that I had taken the year before, I was not at all sure that I could understand Physics. I made an appointment with Professor Rawitscher for a Saturday morning and explained my reservations. He assured me that if I was taking Differential Equations concurrently with Physics 38, which I was, I had all the math that I needed. He then succinctly answered my specific questions concerning classical mechanics. I went away reassured and much happier. Subsequently, I earned an M.S. in Physics and Ph.D. in Chemical Physics and although professionally located in a Chemistry Department, I have been a practicing physicist ever since. That Saturday morning in 1961 was a turning point in my life. My subsequent scientific career would not have been the same without it.

George was such an important presence at UConn and in the community. He will be missed for his humanity, his integrity, and his deep commitment to the causes he so thoroughly endorsed. My husband, Tom Moran, one of his physics colleagues, always held George in the highest esteem.
