George Monteiro, 87, of Windham, husband of Brenda Murphy, died on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 in Windham Hospital of a heart attack. He was a son of the late Francisco and Augusta (Temudo) Monteiro.
Born in Valley Falls, RI on May 23, 1932, George was a graduate of Cumberland High School, Brown University (A.B. and Ph.D.) and Columbia University (A.M.). He taught American literature at Brown for 42 years, retiring in 1998, and was also founding Director of the Center for Portuguese and Brazilian Studies. The author of more than 30 books and hundreds of articles on American and Portuguese literature and culture, he was also an accomplished poet. He was knighted by the Portuguese Government with the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator for Distinguished Contributions to the Study and Dissemination of Portuguese Culture.
George was an avid supporter of the UConn women’s basketball team and the Connecticut Sun and succeeded in the rare feat of being both a Red Sox and a Yankees fan.
Besides his wife, Brenda, to whom he was married for 24 years, he is survived by his children, Kate Monteiro of Warwick, RI, Stephen Monteiro (Manisha Iyer) of Montreal, Quebec, and Emily Monteiro Morelli of Albuquerque, NM; three grandsons, Dante and Aldo Morelli, and Dhruv Monteiro; one brother, Edward Monteiro (Patricia), and a number of nieces and nephews.
