Frederick J. Pogmore

On October 27, 2018, Frederick “Ted” Joseph Pogmore passed away peacefully of natural causes at Evergreen Health Care Center, surrounded by family. Ted was 89 years old.

Ted was born on October 21, 1929 in Meriden Connecticut, and was a son of the late Frederick F. Pogmore and Anna [Sittnick] Pogmore of Wallingford, Connecticut.

Ted is survived by his wife of 68 years, Barbara Daly Pogmore, son Frederick T. Pogmore, daughter Georgiann and husband Stanley Kucia, four grandchildren, Peggy A. Pogmore, Frederick E. Pogmore and wife Patty, Elizabeth and husband Jared McDonald, and Nicholas Kucia, two great-grandsons, Benjamin and William Beaupre, and great-granddaughter Fiona McDonald.

Ted is also survived by his brother Richard Pogmore and wife Jeannie, and sisters Jane Maxwell and Edith Nagy, and many nephews and nieces. Ted was predeceased by his sister Barbara Morrissette and brother George Pogmore.

After graduating from high school, Ted attended the University of Connecticut School of Agriculture majoring in Animal Husbandry. After graduating from UCONN, Ted joined the United States Naval Reserves as a Seabee. Ted retired from the Naval Reserves serving 29 years (Nov. 1948-Dec. 1977) and achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer. For a short time, Ted worked for Daly Roofing Co. of Wallingford, Connecticut. In 1956, Ted was employed by the State of Connecticut as a Conservation Officer. Ted thoroughly enjoyed his employment with the State of Connecticut. He worked his way through the ranks and retired as the Chief of Law Enforcement for the Department of Fisheries and Game in 1985. Ted served the State of Connecticut for 29 years.

Ted had many interests. He was involved with the Town of Farmington's Parks and Recreation and later, the Republican Town Committee in Coventry, Connecticut, for many years. Ted was also actively involved in his son's Boy Scout Troop 68, and his children's time with the Burlington Junior Rifle Club. Ted and his wife were active members of the Grange for many years.

Ted was also a conservationist. On several occasions, he invested in land and sold the land rights to the State and Federal governments to ensure that there would be a place for nature to prosper and survive without the threat of housing development.

Most of all, Ted loved being in the outdoors. Ted's love for the outdoors began as a young boy when he worked on the family farm. He trapped, hunted and fished with his father, uncles and brothers. Anyone who knew Ted, loved listening to his stories. He would include just the right details and embellishments, so you wished you had been on his adventures. He loved raising animals on his farm and growing large vegetable gardens. Not only did Ted instill his love of the outdoors to his children, he also instilled this love to his grandchildren, giving them everlasting memories.

Ted's family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday, November 10, 2018 between 10:00 am and 12:00 at Potter Funeral Home 456 Jackson St. (Rte 195) Willimantic, CT with a memorial service at 11:30.  The memorial service will conclude with Navy Military Honors, at the funeral home. Burial services will be private and at a later date.

Our deepest appreciation for the care, compassion and level of personal care brought to our loved one by the nurses, doctors and staff at Douglas Manor Nursing Home, and Evergreen Health Care Center.
