Flora Oquendo Hernandez, died peacefully on September 7, 2019 surrounded by loved ones. She was the oldest daughter of Guillermo Oquendo and Carmen Hernandez of Puerto Rico. Flora was a nature lover and in particular, she enjoyed horticulture. She spent every possible moment sharing and living the Gospel.
She was a nurturing lady that dedicated her life to educating others, spreading love and compassion where needed. Flora graduated from the University of Puerto Rico in 1952 with a degree in Education. She worked as an Elementary Teacher, an Alternative School Teacher and as a Reading Support Specialist for many years.
Flora is survived by her seven children, Israel Rivera and wife Emily, Arnaldo Rivera and wife Alicia, Melvin Rivera, Edgardo Rivera, Walter Rivera and wife Mary, Hector Rivera and wife Mary and Janice Nye and husband Jesse; fourteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She is also survived by her two sisters, Isabel and Trinidad Oquendo, and two brothers Pedro and Heriberto Oquendo. All of them have brought great joy to her life, especially in her later years.
The family gives everyone who cared for Flora their greatest and warmest gratitude. A wake celebrating her life will be held on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St., Willimantic, CT. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 12, 2109 at Sagrado Corazon de Jesus, 61 Club Rd, Windham, CT.
