Anthony "Tony" Gary Hanson

Anthony G. Hanson, 63, loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather of Windham CT, passed away suddenly at his home on November 25, 2018.  Tony was a graduate of Holy Cross High School, who then furthered his education at The University of Connecticut where he completed his Bachelors degree. Tony continued educational studies in England achieving a higher diploma and Masters degree.

Tony is best known for his achievements in basketball which are well documented and renowned.  He is best known for playing for UConn from 1973 to 1977.  He was a 3 time all New England player and is still 3rd all time leading top scorer at UConn as well being selected as part of the UConn All Century Team.  Tony’s working career was one of education and giving. He was a basketball coach, mentor and spiritual leader. He was a teacher, philosopher and friend. Everyone who came into contact with him became a better person because of it.  Tony was a role model to every young and aspiring basketball player he was ever in contact with. He felt that family was the foundation on which to build and as a result the communities he has created stretch across the world.  When relaxing, Tony preferred to be among his close family or spending time alone. He did not like pomp and ceremony. He loved to play his guitar, sing and jam, but if you asked him to, he would respectfully decline!  Tony’s first love is and always was basketball. He talked of experiences as young as 9yrs old even though he wasn’t very good at the sport at that time! He stayed loyal to his Holy Cross and UConn families which he has passed down to his children.  There are no calling hours.  There will be a private burial attended by family and close friends.  A Memorial Service will be held on Monday December 3, 2018 at 2:00pm at Storrs Congregational Church, 2 N Eagleville Rd. Storrs. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made "In memory  of Tony Hanson" to ‘The Dee Rowe Athletic Scholarship Fund’.  Please make checks payable to: The UConn Foundation, Inc., 2390 Alumni Dr. Unit 2390, Storrs, CT 06269.
