Alexandra Stewart Hill

Alexandra Stewart Hill,  A former commodities analyst at Merrill-Lynch and mother of three died on Tuesday at the age of 79.

She fell ill on Veterans Day and after a week in the hospital fell reaching for her address book.  She never recovered.  

Sandy, as she was known, was born in Glasgow, Scotland, March 14th, 1939 to Archibald and Mary MacWilliam, (nee McKann.)  Her father was a soldier for the Scottish Rifles regiment and later the Royal Air Force during the First World War.  He came to America and worked as a machinist for the Inter-Borough Rapid Transit company or IRT.  Her mother was a master of traditional Scottish knitting.  She has one sister, Margaret MacKenzie Beach of Whitestone, New York.  Sandy came to America at the age of six weeks.  She grew up in the Soundview area of the Bronx when it was considered, “the country.”

She married David Ramsay Hill of the 501st airborne regiment after meeting him at a church ice cream social.  They had three children, Laurie McWilliam Howe, Andrew David Hill and Alexander Stewart Hill who survive her.  She has nine grandchildren, David McWIlliam Howe, Aaron Victor Howe, Daniel Jedediah Howe, Caleb Nathan Howe, Andrew Richard Hill, Vanessa Alexandra Hill, Christopher David Hill, David Ramsay Hill, and Fiona Beatrice Hill.  She has two great-grandchildren through Victor, Charlotte Emerson Howe, and Weston Paul Howe

Sandy was identified as a gifted mathematician at a young age and declined a full scholarship to Columbia to work on Wall Street.  She rose quickly at Merrill-Lynch from a chart analyst to writing global commodity reports.  She was offered a leadership position in San Francisco but declined it to stay in New York.

Sandy left Merril-Lynch to have a family and moved to Garden City, New York where she restored one of the original Apostle Houses.  She later moved to West Redding, Connecticut.  In 2014 she moved to Chaplin to be near her son Alexander and had four, very happy years there where she enjoyed gardening, foreign films and re-telling family history to her grandchildren.
