Nicholas "Nick" Haidous

Nicholas "Nick" Haidous, 90, of Storrs, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at Hartford Hospital on Monday, September 16, 2013. He was born on February 15, 1924 in Kimi, Evia, Greece. He was a carpenter and successful businessman who built and operated University Plaza shopping center in Mansfield, CT. Nick served in the Greek Merchant Marines and arrived in the U.S. in 1949. He was a proud longtime member of Hellenic Studies Paideia which honored him in a Greek Letters Celebration on January, 28, 2012 for his key role in constructing a Greek Orthodox Chapel at the campus of the University of Connecticut. He was married for 54 years to Georgia (Carandreou) of Athens, Greece. Nick was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters Eleni and Rita. He is survived by his sister Aliki and his brother, Anthony. He is also survived by his children (3 daughters and 1 son): Artemis Hartley and her husband, Harry, of Palm Beach, Florida; Margarita Galey and her husband James, of Coventry, CT, Natasha Haidous of New York City, and Emmanuel Haidous of Storrs, CT. Nicholas will be greatly missed by his 3 grandchildren: Nicholas, Jack, and Grace. A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, September 21 at 2:00 PM at the Three Hierarchs Greek Orthodox Chapel, 28 Dog Lane, Storrs, CT. Memorial donations in Nick's honor may be made to the Three Hierarchs Greek Orthodox Chapel, 28 Dog Lane, Storrs, CT, 06268. Burial will be private. there are no calling hours.
