Herbert R. Savage Sr., 90, of Baltic, died Monday April 18, 2011 at home. He was born in Norwich, CT November 3, 1920. He was the son of H.E. Savage and Fern L. (Richardson) Savage. Herbert was the last surviving son from a family of nine brothers and sisters; David, Arthur, Russell, John, Henry, Helen, Joyce and Meredith. He graduated from Wheeler High School in North Stonington in 1938. Herbert was a WWII veteran who served from 1944-1946 as a staff Sgt. in the 58th Signal Batt., whose tour of duty included Italy and Japan. He married L. Alice Chabot in 1948, a marriage that lasted 57 years until her death in 2005. Herb worked for Lehigh Petroleum from 1953 to his retirement in 1976. He was well known for his Model T knowledge and antique automobile history. He also had the ability to get anything old running again. He was the Baltic library assistant for several years and volunteered at Yaworski Haul of Fame museum for many years. Herb is survived by two sons Larry Savage of Canterbury, Herbert Savage Jr. of Baltic and a daughter Linda Savage of Waterbury, five grandchildren Wayne Savage and his wife Sandy of Jewett City, Stephen Savage and his wife Julie of Canterbury, Elissa Savage of Canterbury, Sherri Parisek and her husband Andrew of Columbia, TN and Glenn Savage of Columbia, TN, eighteen great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. At his request there are no calling hours or funeral services.
