Dan, we were saddened to hear of Tom's passing. He was a wonderful man with a big heart & an even bigger sense of humor. His visits to the bookstore were always a treat. Please accept our deepest condolences.

Tom was a wonderful teacher who became a great friend. We met when I was in his science fiction lit class at UConn in 1974, where his humorous teaching style and his delight in the material he taught made every class session fun -- a rarity among college classes for sure!
He encouraged me (and others) in my pursuit of a writing career and I know he thoroughly enjoyed the successes of his former students. For nearly 2 decades after I graduated, Tom invited me back to UConn to talk to his classes, and it was always a treat to spend time with him.
Tom's way of teaching with enthusiasm and a sense of humor inspired me to make all the classes I teach (both dog training and writing) as much fun as possible.
As time flies by, we often fail to take the time to thank the people who've enriched our lives along the way. Though I hadn't seen Tom in a number of years, I made sure to write him a letter a few years back, to let him know how much I appreciated him as a teacher and friend. Though the world will be a less bright place without him in it, I'm fortunate that our paths crossed -- and thinking of him will always make me smile.
