Robert F. Culpin of Windham, CT died peacefully at his home on Thursday, June 15, 2017. Robert was born in Willimantic, CT on July 21, 1923, the son of Harold and Bertha (Meyerhart) Culpin.
He graduated with honors from Windham High School and enlisted in the Army Air Corp in March 1943 and served as a B-17 radio operator, as a qualified expert gunner, and participated in ground combat at lwo Jima and subsequent communications installations until receiving an honorable discharge in February 1946 as a corporal. He reenlisted with the United States Air Force Reserve and served as a Technical Sargent with the 36th Fighter Bomber Wing from December 1949 to November 1953, and with the Communications Section of the 7365th Air Force Squadron and continued serving in the Air Force Reserve until honorably discharged in March 1960 as a Master Sargent.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed with Western Electric as a supervisor of PBX installations. He was a life member of the Willimantic American Legion Post 19, the Willimantic Veterans of Foreign Wars, The Elks Lodge, a Mayflower Descendent and a member of, and avid golfer at the Willimantic Country Club for many years. He greatly enjoyed playing cards and catching up on all the latest news with his friends at the Legion. With a cigar or pipe in hand, his quick wit and assessment of world affairs entertained his many friends and family.
He is survived by his brother, William Culpin and his wife Janet, his nephews Michael Morell and his wife Denise, Glenn Morell and his wife Candace, John Culpin and his wife Joan, William Meyerhardt, Johann Goergmaier of Germany, and nieces Carol (Culpin) Hodgkins and her husband, Clayton and Elaine (Meyerhardt) Magnee and her husband John. Robert was predeceased by his wife Maria (Goergmaier) Culpin, his brother Richard Culpin, and his sister June (Culpin) Morell. The family would like to express special gratitude to Robert's caregiver, Irek, who's support, compassion and friendship will always be remembered.
A graveside service officiated by Pastor Steve Washburn will be held with military honors at the Windham Center Cemetery, Route 203, Windham Center, CT on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions, in Robert's memory, can be made to the American Legion Post 19, P.O.
