Peter G. Chowanec

Peter G. Chowanec, 86, of Columbia, husband of Sonja (Bashko) Chowanec, died Thursday September 22, 2016 at Harrington Court, Colchester.  He was born in Columbia, CT, the son of the late George and Mary (Madjik) Chowanec.  Peter acquired his family’s Dairy Farm 1949.  He quit going to school, because of his father’s illness, to run the farm and provide for his parents for their lifetime.  Peter sold his dairy farm in 1980 but continued to custom farm as far away as Glastonbury. He was an avid polka dancer, enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling. In addition to his wife, Peter is survived by a special niece Donna Kerr, and nephews Fred Chowanec, Gerald Golab and his great nephew Rick Chowanec and a good friend and neighbor Darren Nosal and a multitude of nieces and nephews in Connecticut, Vermont, Oregon, Florida and Virginia.  He was predeceased by three brothers and eight sisters.  Peter’s family will receive relatives and friends on Friday September 30, 2016 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Potter Funeral Home 456 Jackson St., Willimantic.  A graveside service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday October 1, 2016 at the Holy Trinity Orthodox Cemetery, Willimantic.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association Research, 200 Executive Blvd., Suite 4B, Southington, CT 06489, American Association for Cancer Research, 615 Chestnut St. 17th Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19106, or Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, 414 Valley St. Willimantic, CT 06226.  For an online memorial guestbook please visit www.potterfuneralhome.com.
