Jay Lerman, aged 87, died on January 9, 2017. He died peacefully, with family at his side.

He was living in Farmington, CT and died in Farmington, CT. Born on May 29, 1929, in Philadelphia, PA, to Nockey and Beatrice Lerman, Jay was raised first in Philadelphia, and then Miami, Florida. At age 17 he left home to join the Army-Air Force, where he served 3 years in Alaska as a radio operator.  After his discharge from the military he enrolled at Temple University, in Philadelphia, PA, where he received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees and met his wife, Sally.  They married in October 1954 and left 3 years later for Pittsburgh where Jay received his doctorate in 1961. Along with his academic pursuits at Temple, Jay was an active member of the Temple theatre community, performing in many shows. In 1961 Jay began a 31-year teaching career at the University of Connecticut.  He served as the Department Head for Communication Sciences during the last several years of his tenure at UConn, and continued to mentor students as a Professor Emeritus after retiring.  Jay and Sally raised their family of four children in Storrs, CT. Jay loved golf, fishing, jazz music, and spending time with family and friends. He is survived by his four children, Noah, Julie, Seth, and Jesse; son-in-law, West; daughter-in-law, Anna; four grandchildren, Emma, Zoë, Owen, and Georgia; and sister, Sis. He was preceded in death by his wife, Selma (Sally) Roth Lerman.
