Jackson P. Sumner, 84, passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2018. He was born July 29,1933. Jackson was a native of Willimantic and one of the first children born at Windham Hospital. The son of Stanley and Helen Sumner, their only child, grew up in Willimantic, graduated from Tabor Academy, Tufts University, and served in the US Navy as an officer for two years. In 1957 he married Sally, and in 1958 joined Sumner and Sumner, Inc. He helped build the successful Willimantic business for nearly 50 years before retiring in 2006. Jackson was very involved in the community, serving as a Director and as President of the Windham Hospital Board. He was Chairman of the Windham Zoning and Inland Wetlands Commission, President of the Windham Center Library Board, President of the Willimantic Chamber of Commerce, part of several organizations involved in preserving Eastern Connecticut forests, and a volunteer at Mystic Seaport.  Jackson was passionate about sailing and wooden boats, having started sailing with his father at the age of 5. He enjoyed teaching his children how to sail, taking them on overnight trips around the coast of MA. He is survived by his two children, Jane and Robert; four grandchildren; his former wife, Sally and three cousins. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Congregational Church, (in support of their camp ministry) 199 Valley Street, Willimantic CT 06226.
