Florence A. Palmer, 98, of Mansfield Center, CT passed into eternal peace Wednesday, July 20, 2016. She was born January 18, 1918 in Willimantic, the daughter of Amelia (Hajek) and John Hnizdo.
She attended Windham Center Grammar School, Windham High School and the Willimantic State Normal School (ESCU), graduating in 1939. Florence taught school in Lebanon; Louisiana; Natchaug School in Willimantic and finally at Windham Center School. She was a teacher for 37 years. Florence was a member of Echo Grange #180 in Mansfield, Pomona, State and National Granges for 79 years. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Mansfield.
Florence enjoyed gardening, music, reading, crafts, puzzles, sewing and cooking. She enjoyed traveling with her husband on trips to Hawaii and with a friend to Alaska. She also enjoyed her pets – dogs, cats and a baby deer.
She was predeceased by her parents; by her husband, Kenneth Alden Palmer who passed away in 1997, her son William Alden Palmer who died in 2010 and her sister Evelyn Riordan who passed away in 2016. She is survived by her son James Palmer and his wife Pat and his 3 children – Michael and wife Jess; Kathy; Cindy and grandson Brady. She is survived by a grandson John and wife Tanya and their children Brandon and Amber. She also leaves 4 nephews.
The family wishes to thank the dedicated and caring 2nd floor staff at Douglas Manor for their genuine love and care of Florence while a resident there for the past year.
The family will receive friends and relatives, Sunday, July 24, 2016 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic, CT. A Funeral Service will be held Monday, July 25, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home, with Interment to follow at Windham Center Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made, In the Memory of Florence Palmer, to the Echo Grange, 622 Jerusalem Rd., Windham, CT 06280.
